Vitamin C Forms: Compare Ascorbic Acid and Buffered Labels
Compare vitamin C products by the named form, declared vitamin C amount, added minerals, serving count, and package price.By Suppscan Editorial Team · Last checked October 1, 2026Compare vitamin C products by the named form, declared vitamin C amount, added minerals, serving count, and package price.
Vitamin C products can use ascorbic acid or mineral ascorbates such as sodium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate. A front-label word such as “buffered” does not replace the ingredient list or the amount of vitamin C declared per serving.
Read both the nutrient line and ingredient source
Record the vitamin C amount and unit from Supplement Facts, then note the ingredient form and any added mineral shown elsewhere on the panel. Do not count the weight of a compound as though it were all vitamin C. If a product also contains bioflavonoids or a proprietary blend, list those separately from the vitamin C line.
Compare package value with like units
Multiply vitamin C per serving by servings per container to estimate the total declared amount. Divide package price by that total and use a consistent unit, such as price per 1,000 mg. This calculation does not rank the forms or recommend a personal amount. If serving data are missing, leave the normalized price unknown.
Frequently asked questions
Does “buffered” tell me how much vitamin C is in a serving?
No. Use the stated vitamin C amount in Supplement Facts and check the ingredient list for the actual form.
Can a product’s total powder weight be used as vitamin C?
No. Use the declared vitamin C amount, not net contents or total compound weight.
