Herbal Extract Ratios vs Standardized Amounts: Read the Label

Learn what to record when an herbal label lists an extract ratio, plant part, or standardized marker—and what those terms do not prove.

Herbal labels can show a botanical name, plant part, extract ratio, or standardized marker. These are different pieces of product data and should not be collapsed into one “potency” score.

Record identity and preparation

Copy the common and Latin plant name where shown, the plant part, whether the ingredient is powder or extract, and the stated amount per serving. If the label gives a ratio such as 10:1, record it as the manufacturer’s preparation claim. Do not convert it into a standardized active-compound amount unless the label also states that amount and basis.

Check standardized markers separately

If the package names a constituent or percentage, record both the percentage and the total extract amount. For example, a percentage can be applied to a stated extract quantity only when the product’s label makes clear that the percentage refers to that ingredient. Marketing terms like “high potency” do not fill missing fields.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 10:1 extract mean ten times the health effect?

No. It is a preparation ratio claim, not a clinical result or proof of equivalent active content.

Can I compare two herbs by milligrams alone?

Only as a package quantity. Keep species, plant part, preparation, and standardized markers distinct.
