Probiotic CFUs: Check Whether Counts Last Through Expiration

A label check for probiotic CFU claims: compare serving counts, the stated time basis, strain data, storage, and expiry.

Probiotic labels may describe CFUs—the number of viable microorganisms—at manufacture or through the expiration/use-by date. The two claims use different time points, so keep the basis beside the number.

Read the count as a dated claim

Record CFUs per serving, whether the count is guaranteed through expiration or stated only at manufacture, and the package’s date and storage requirements. If the label does not say when the count applies, mark that field as unclear. Do not compare an end-of-shelf-life number directly with a production-time number as if they were identical.

NIH ODS explains that viable counts can decline during shelf life and that higher CFUs do not automatically mean greater health benefits. If a product lists only total microorganism weight, that is not the same unit as viable CFUs. Keep strain identity and storage instructions visible too.
