Probiotic Labels: Compare Genus, Species, and Strain

Compare probiotic products by full microorganism identity, strain code, CFUs, serving, expiration date, and storage instructions.

A probiotic name can have several parts: genus, species, and a strain identifier. Two labels that share a genus or species may still name different strains. Preserve the full identity when comparing products.

Copy the complete microorganism name

For each listed organism, record genus, species, and any letters or numbers after the name. Note whether the label gives a quantity for each strain or only for a combined product. A multi-strain list without individual counts does not support a per-strain comparison.

Pair identity with count and handling

Record colony-forming units (CFUs) per serving, the basis for that count (manufacture or end of shelf life), expiration date, and storage directions. NIH ODS notes that strain and CFU count both matter to research; a larger CFU number alone does not prove greater benefit. Do not use a general product comparison to select a strain for a condition.

Frequently asked questions

Are two products comparable if both say “Lactobacillus”?

Not completely. Look for the full genus, species, and strain designation.

Does a higher CFU number automatically mean a better probiotic?

No. Count alone does not establish health effects or product equivalence.
