Third-Party Supplement Testing: Verify the Exact Product and Mark

Check which organization issued a supplement testing mark, whether the exact product is listed, and what that program actually verifies.By Suppscan Editorial Team · Last checked October 11, 2026

Check which organization issued a supplement testing mark, whether the exact product is listed, and what that program actually verifies.

“Third-party tested” is incomplete unless the seller identifies the testing or certification program and the exact product covered. A facility audit and a finished-product certification are different claims.

Verify the mark at its source

  1. Copy the certification organization and exact program name from the package.
  2. Search that organization’s current public product directory for the brand and specific product.
  3. Match the product form and label, not just the company name.
  4. Read the program’s scope: ingredient identity, label content, contaminants, manufacturing practices, or other checks.

NSF and USP describe product-verification programs with defined scopes. A GMP facility registration or audit does not mean every product from that facility was independently tested or certified. FDA approval is also separate; dietary supplements are not FDA-approved before marketing.

Keep quality claims in bounds

A mark may support specific quality checks, but it is not proof that a supplement treats a condition, is right for an individual, or is equivalent to another product. If a listing shows a seal but the exact product is absent from the certifier’s directory, ask the seller or certifier before treating it as verified.

Frequently asked questions

Does “GMP certified” verify the finished supplement?

Not necessarily. Check whether the claim is about a facility or the exact product.

Does third-party certification mean FDA-approved?

No. Certification programs and FDA product approval are separate.
