Algae-based oil offers a non-fish source for omega-3 products, but source wording is only one part of the label. To compare listings, look for the actual fatty-acid amounts and a clear serving definition.
Check which omega-3 amounts are disclosed
Record total algae oil separately from EPA and DHA. Some labels disclose one fatty acid but not the other; do not assume an undisclosed amount is zero or equal to a competitor’s. Copy the serving size and number of capsules or softgels in that serving.
Use a like-for-like price unit
If EPA and DHA are both declared, add them for a combined comparison amount. Multiply by servings per container, then divide package price by the total to calculate cost per 1,000 mg. Identify this as a label-based unit price, not a ranking of sources or a health recommendation.
Review the complete ingredient list for carrier oils, flavors, and other added ingredients. If the listing says “plant omega-3” but does not name the source or disclose the fatty-acid amount, keep those fields unknown and request the current label.
Frequently asked questions
Does total algae oil equal DHA?
No. Use the separately declared DHA amount; total oil may include other fats and ingredients.
Can I calculate a combined EPA+DHA value if only DHA is shown?
No. Report the disclosed amount and mark the combined value incomplete.
