Protein Powder Blends: How to Compare Sources and Amounts
A label checklist for protein blends: identify each source, declared protein, serving size, allergens, and what the package leaves undisclosed.By Suppscan Editorial Team · Last checked September 30, 2026A label checklist for protein blends: identify each source, declared protein, serving size, allergens, and what the package leaves undisclosed.
“Protein blend” can describe a product with several protein ingredients, but the phrase alone does not show which source supplies most of the protein. Read the ingredient list and Supplement Facts together.
Record the sources as printed
Copy each named source—such as whey concentrate, whey isolate, soy, pea, or rice—and preserve the order shown. If the manufacturer gives no amount for each source, record those amounts as undisclosed. Do not infer a source ratio from the product name or front label.
Separate total protein from the blend weight
Record the powder serving weight and the grams of protein per serving as different fields. The protein line describes the declared protein amount; a proprietary blend’s total weight does not reveal how much each source contributes. Compare serving count and allergen information as well.
FDA identifies milk and soy among major food allergens. Check both the ingredient list and the allergen statement where applicable; “plant blend” does not by itself prove that a product is free of every allergen or cross-contact risk. Ask the manufacturer when details are unclear.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compare two blends by their blend names?
Only as names. For a product comparison, use disclosed ingredients and protein grams; keep missing source amounts unknown.
Does more protein per scoop tell me which source is best?
It tells you the declared protein amount for that serving. It does not establish quality, taste, allergy safety, or individual fit.
