Protein Powder Labels: Scoop Weight vs Protein Grams

Learn which label numbers describe powder weight, declared protein, and serving count so package comparisons use the right denominator.

A front label may emphasize a scoop size or a large number of grams, but shoppers need to know what that number measures. The Supplement Facts panel and net contents statement provide separate pieces of the comparison.

Keep three quantities separate

• Net contents: total powder in the container.
• Serving size: the labeled portion, often described by powder weight and scoop count.
• Protein per serving: the amount of protein declared for that labeled portion.

For example, a 34 g powder serving that declares 24 g protein is not a 34 g protein serving. To estimate total package protein, multiply the declared protein per serving by the stated servings per container. Use that total for unit-price math only when both label values are present.

Check claims against the panel

Compare the front-panel statement with the ingredient list, serving definition, and allergen information. A “high protein” phrase does not disclose every ingredient or make two formulas equivalent. If the image is blurry or data conflict, mark the value unknown and check the manufacturer’s current label.
